Fixed, Implant Supported Overdentures
Choosing dentures used to be a fast and easy process. Find out what size is going to fit your mouth, choose a style that offers a natural look and then get them constructed and fitted to your mouth. Today, there are many different denture types that rely on different locking mechanisms to hold them in place. Now that dental implants are increasing in popularity, they’re being used as an effective way to lock dentures in place. While we do offer many semi-permanent locking dentures, many of our customers prefer the fixed implant supported denture solution that we provide here at NuSet Dental Implants and Oral Surgery.
How Fixed Dentures Work
Fixed dentures are very much like standard teeth, but they rely on a unique root system. With fixed denture systems, there are usually four dental implants embedded into the gums and jawbone. These implants are locked firmly into place and supported by a structure system similar to what tooth roots rely on. Once they are in place firmly, dentures are then mounted right to the implants to hold them in position firmly. The mounting mechanism is designed to hold up for years and create a nice tight hold that gives the dentures a natural feel.
An Affordable Option
While fixed dentures are quite expensive when compared to standard dentures, they’re very affordable when comparing them to a full mouth of dental implants. Not only do they offer similar performance to dental implants alone, but they rely on substantially fewer implants overall. Patients with fixed dentures report that they can chew reliably and comfortably and that they feel like they have standard teeth again. While they aren’t exactly the same, they are a pretty close approximate that’s worth considering.
With these dentures, you’ll have to maintain and clean them regularly to get the best possible results. When doing this, it’s important to clean them like you would clean your own teeth. Simply brush and floss them on a regular basis, and you’ll keep them looking and smelling good. Since they are fixed in place, no denture solutions or other non-standard cleaning mechanisms are required. We also recommend that our patients pick up a Water Pick tool, or a similar item for improved cleaning power.
Considering Other Options
While the fixed denture system appeals to many people that want realistic teeth once again, it’s not for everyone. There are plenty of people out there that like the simplicity of removing dentures and soaking them for cleaning purposes or cleaning them outside of the mouth. For people that prefer a denture that is easier to remove, or that can be readily replaced, a semi-permanent solution could be the answer. We offer both bar-mounted and implant-mounted solutions that can be removed as well.
